rev
One crankshaft turn
Rev is short for revolution, specifically of an engine—the number of times the crankshaft rotates per minute.
A tachometer measures revs.
To rev an engine is to increase its speed, especially while stationary: He revved the motorcycle at the stoplight.
Figuratively, to rev up is to energize or prepare for action: The team was revving up for the finals.
Rev also appears as an abbreviation for Reverend.
