fumes

Exhaust pipe output

Fumes are gases or vapors, especially unpleasant or harmful ones: exhaust fumes, paint fumes, toxic fumes.

The word almost always appears in the plural and carries negative connotations—you breathe fresh air but inhale fumes.

To fume is to emit fumes or, more commonly, to seethe with anger: She was fuming after the meeting.
