dredging
Underwater sediment removal
Dredging is the process of scooping sediment, debris, or other material from the bottom of a body of water.
Channels are dredged to keep them navigable; harbors are dredged to deepen them.
The verb dredge also means to coat food lightly with flour or breadcrumbs before cooking: Dredge the chicken in seasoned flour.
To dredge up is to bring something unpleasant back to attention: Why dredge up old grievances?
