infilling
Filling empty spaces
Infilling is the process of filling in gaps or empty spaces.
In urban planning, infill development builds on vacant lots within already developed areas: The city encouraged infilling to prevent sprawl.
In other contexts, infilling means inserting material to complete something incomplete—filling cracks in masonry, adding data to incomplete records, or generating missing content in AI applications.
