placer

Alluvial mineral deposit

A placer is a deposit of sand or gravel containing particles of gold or other valuable minerals, accumulated by water action in streambeds or on beaches.

Placer mining extracts these minerals by washing away lighter material: The forty-niners worked placer claims along California rivers.

The word comes from Spanish, meaning "sandbank."
