bycatch
Unintended marine victims
Bycatch is the unintended capture of non-target species during commercial fishing—dolphins caught in tuna nets, sea turtles snagged by shrimp trawlers, juvenile fish hauled up with mature ones.
The term occasionally extends to any collateral capture: The surveillance program's bycatch included thousands of innocent citizens' communications.
