backhoe

Articulated arm digger

A backhoe is a piece of excavating equipment with a hinged bucket on the end of a jointed arm, used for digging trenches and foundations.

The bucket digs by pulling toward the machine—hence "back." Most backhoes combine a front loader bucket with the rear excavator arm: The contractor brought in a backhoe to dig the foundation.
