drainage

Where water goes

Drainage is the process of water or other liquid draining away, or a system designed to carry it off: The field has poor drainage, a drainage ditch.

In medicine, drainage removes fluid from a wound or body cavity.

The word also refers to an area from which water flows into a river system: the Mississippi drainage basin.
