dragline

Giant bucket crane

A dragline is a type of heavy excavating equipment that uses a bucket suspended from a long boom, swung out and dragged back to scoop material.

Draglines are used in surface mining and civil engineering to move enormous quantities of earth.

In another sense, a dragline is the silk thread a spider trails behind it as it moves, serving as a lifeline and anchor point.
