deposition

Out-of-court testimony

Deposition has two main clusters of meaning.

In law, a deposition is sworn testimony given outside of court, typically recorded for later use at trial: The lawyer took depositions from three witnesses.

The other sense involves removal or settling: the deposition of a king from power, or the deposition of sediment by a river.

In chemistry and physics, deposition is the process by which a gas transforms directly into a solid.
