tin

Soft silvery metal

Tin is a chemical element and an abundant, widely used metal.

Some things made or formerly made of tin are called tins, especially in British English (where the corresponding American term is can or pan), such as muffin tin, cake tin, or tin of sardines.

So-called tin foil is today more likely to be made of aluminum.

To tin something, in British English, is to seal it in a tin (or can in American English): We’ll tin tomatoes to use in the winter.
