silting up

Channel gradually filling

Silting up is the gradual accumulation of silt—fine sediment carried by water—that fills in a waterway, harbor, or reservoir.

Rivers silt up when flow slows and particles settle.

The process can render ports unusable or choke irrigation channels: The old canal had silted up completely.

To prevent silting up, channels require periodic dredging.
