dip

Sauce for chips

For a short word, the noun and verb dip has somewhat complex associations.

It often suggests downward motion, and there is sometimes liquid involved, as when you take a dip (go for a swim).

If you dip a spoon into a pan, you put it in and bring it out again.

If a surface dips (dip in the road) it descends suddenly and perhaps unexpectedly.

The thick-ish food that you dip chips into is called – what else – dip!
