A cannonball is a round metal projectile fired from a cannon—the original ammunition before explosive shells.

The word now more commonly refers to a diving technique where you tuck your knees to your chest and hit the water in a ball shape, maximizing the splash: He did a cannonball off the high dive.

As a verb, to cannonball is to dive this way or to move with similar compact force.
