pesto
Basil pine sauce
Pesto is an uncooked sauce of crushed basil, garlic, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil, traditionally served with pasta.
The name comes from the Italian for "pounded," describing how the ingredients are ground together, traditionally with mortar and pestle.
Variations substitute other greens or nuts: sun-dried tomato pesto, arugula pesto, walnut pesto.
