abseil

Descend by rope

To abseil is to descend a steep surface by sliding down a rope, typically with the rope passing through a friction device attached to a harness: We abseiled down the cliff face.

The technique is essential in rock climbing, caving, and rescue operations.

Americans usually say rappel; abseil is standard in British English and internationally.
