Dive touching toes
A jackknife is a folding pocket knife with a blade that swings into the handle.
The word extends to anything that folds similarly: a jackknife is a dive in which the body bends at the waist, touches the toes, then straightens before entering the water.
When a tractor-trailer jackknifes, the cab and trailer fold toward each other at the hitch point, usually during a skid.
As a verb, jackknife means to fold or bend sharply in this manner: The truck jackknifed on the icy highway.
