shellac
Bug-derived coating
Shellac is a resin secreted by lac insects, processed into thin flakes and dissolved in alcohol to make a hard, glossy finish for wood and other surfaces.
Before synthetic alternatives, shellac was the standard wood finish and the material for phonograph records.
As a verb, to shellac is to coat with this finish.
In slang, to shellac someone is to beat them decisively: We got shellacked 42 to nothing.
