nerve
Fiber transmitting sensation
Nerve has different connotations according to whether it is understood as a countable or uncountable noun, or used in the plural.
Most basically, a nerve is a band of sensitive tissue in the nervous system.
Nerves may refer to all of these collectively, but more commonly suggests agitation arising from fear, dread, or anxiety: Grandmother is all nerves this morning.
If you’ve got nerve, on the other hand, (often got a nerve in British English) you are credited with being bold, audacious, or impudent.
If someone says or does something that touches a nerve, it evokes an unpleasant reaction.
