respiration
Cellular energy process
Respiration is the process of breathing—inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide.
In biology, it also refers to the cellular process by which organisms convert nutrients into energy: aerobic respiration requires oxygen.
Medical contexts often use respiration for breathing rate: The patient's respiration was shallow and rapid.
