guards
Watchers over valuables
Guards are people who watch over something to protect or control it—prison guards, security guards, bodyguards.
The term extends to protective devices: a mouth guard, a shin guard, a guard rail.
To guard is to protect or watch over: Guard the door while I'm gone.
To be on guard is to be watchful; to let your guard down is to become vulnerable.
In basketball, guards are the smaller players who handle the ball.
