prophase

Division's opening act

Prophase is the first stage of cell division, during which chromosomes condense and become visible, the nuclear membrane begins to break down, and the spindle apparatus starts to form.

In mitosis, prophase prepares the cell for the separation of duplicated chromosomes.

Meiosis has two prophase stages, with prophase I being notably longer and involving the pairing and crossing over of homologous chromosomes.
