crystal set
Homemade radio receiver
A crystal set is an early type of radio receiver that uses a crystal detector rather than vacuum tubes or transistors to convert radio waves into sound.
Popular in the 1920s, crystal sets required no external power source and were often built as hobbyist projects: My grandfather built a crystal set as a boy and listened to broadcasts through headphones.
