withholding

Not giving up

Withholding is money taken from wages before the employee receives them, typically for taxes, insurance, or retirement contributions.

The employer withholds these amounts and sends them directly to the government or other institutions: Check your withholding if you're getting a huge refund—you're giving the IRS an interest-free loan.

The term also applies to the act of holding back anything: the withholding of evidence.
