episode

One serialized chapter

An episode is a distinct event or period within a larger series.

Television shows are divided into episodes—individual installments of a continuing narrative.

In life, an episode is a notable incident or stretch of time: a brief episode of happiness, an embarrassing episode from my youth.

Medical episodes are occurrences of illness or symptoms: a psychotic episode, an episode of chest pain.

The word suggests something bounded—with a beginning and end—set against a longer backdrop.
