silencing
Making someone stop
Silencing is the act of causing someone or something to become quiet or to stop making sound.
More often it describes suppressing speech, expression, or dissent: The regime's silencing of journalists drew international condemnation.
In molecular biology, gene silencing refers to mechanisms that prevent a gene from being expressed.
The word carries strong connotations of power imbalance—those who do the silencing typically hold authority over those being silenced.
