static

Fixed, not moving

Static describes what stays in place rather than moving or changing.

Static electricity is charge that accumulates on surfaces rather than flowing as current.

A static image doesn't animate.

Static on a radio or television is the crackling interference from electrical disturbances—and by extension, any resistance or pushback: I got static from my boss about the proposal.

As an adjective, static often carries negative connotations of stagnation: The project has been static for months.
