play-by-play

Moment-by-moment description

Play-by-play is a running commentary describing events as they happen, originally and still primarily in sports broadcasting: The announcer's play-by-play kept listeners engaged even without seeing the game.

Extended to any detailed sequential account: She gave me a play-by-play of the argument.

As a noun, it names the commentary itself or the broadcaster who delivers it.
