boom box

Shoulder-carried stereo

A boom box is a large portable radio with cassette or CD player and powerful speakers, designed to be carried and played loudly in public spaces.

The term evokes 1980s urban culture, when people carried them on shoulders blasting music.

Though the technology is dated, boom box still describes any chunky portable sound system: He showed up at the beach with an old-school boom box.
