boombox
Portable street stereo
A boombox is a large portable stereo with built-in speakers, popular in the 1980s for playing cassette tapes and radio at high volume.
The name suggests both the bass-heavy sound and the box-like shape.
Boomboxes became icons of hip-hop culture, carried on shoulders through city streets: He walked down the block with a boombox blasting.
