canto
Epic verse division
A canto is a major division of a long poem, like a chapter in a book.
The term comes from Italian for "song" and appears most famously in Dante's *Divine Comedy* and Ezra Pound's *Cantos*.
Epic and narrative poems are traditionally organized into cantos: The third canto describes the pilgrim's descent.
