derrick

Drilling rig structure

A derrick is a framework structure used for lifting and moving heavy objects.

In oil drilling, the derrick is the tall tower over a well that supports the drilling equipment.

The word also refers to a type of crane with a movable pivoted arm.

The oil derricks dotted the Texas landscape. (Capitalized Derrick is a given name.)
