spar

Practice trading punches

Spar has two unrelated meanings.

One is a pole used in sailing—masts, booms, and yards are all spars.

The other meaning is to fight or argue, especially in a controlled way: boxers spar in practice bouts, politicians spar in debates.

They sparred over budget priorities for an hour.

The fighting sense suggests competitive exchange without full commitment to harm.
