shrapnel

Explosive metal fragments

Shrapnel is fragments from an exploding bomb, shell, or other munition.

Originally a specific type of artillery shell filled with metal balls, designed to burst in the air and spray its contents over troops below.

Now the word refers to any flying debris from an explosion: She was hit by shrapnel from the blast.

Informally, shrapnel can mean loose change jingling in a pocket.
