turnpike

Highway with booths

A turnpike is a toll road—a highway where drivers pay fees to use it.

The term comes from the spiked barrier (a turning pike) that blocked passage until tolls were paid.

In the northeastern United States, turnpike remains common in official road names: the New Jersey Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Elsewhere, toll road or tollway is more typical.
