allele

Chromosomal gene form

An allele is one of two or more versions of a gene that can occupy the same position on a chromosome.

You inherit one allele from each parent, and these may be identical or different.

When different, one may be dominant and expressed while the other is recessive: She carries one allele for brown eyes and one for blue.
