recessive
Hidden in heterozygotes
Recessive describes a trait that remains hidden when paired with a dominant counterpart.
In genetics, a recessive gene only expresses itself when inherited from both parents: Blue eyes are recessive.
The word extends to anything that tends to withdraw or stay in the background rather than assert itself.
