recessive gene
Masked hereditary unit
A recessive gene is one whose effects appear only when inherited from both parents.
If paired with a dominant gene, the recessive trait remains hidden—the person carries it without expressing it.
Many genetic conditions follow this pattern: Both parents carried the recessive gene for cystic fibrosis.
Blue eyes result from recessive genes.
