karyotype

Cellular chromosome map

A karyotype is the complete set of chromosomes in an organism's cells, arranged and photographed according to size and structure.

The term also refers to the visual representation itself—a chart showing paired chromosomes used to detect abnormalities: The karyotype revealed an extra chromosome 21, indicating Down syndrome.

As a verb, to karyotype is to prepare or analyze such a display.
