copy number

Repeated sequence tally

Copy number refers to the quantity of a particular DNA sequence present in a genome or cell.

In genetics, it describes how many copies of a gene or segment exist: The gene has a copy number of two in most human cells.

Copy number variations—deletions or duplications of DNA segments—can affect disease risk and drug response.

In molecular biology, copy number also indicates how many copies of a plasmid or other genetic element a cell contains.
