adaptation
Species survival mechanism
Adaptation is the process of adjusting to new conditions, or the result of that adjustment.
In biology, it refers to evolutionary changes that help organisms survive in their environment: The camel's hump is an adaptation for desert life.
More broadly, anything modified to fit new circumstances is an adaptation: The film is an adaptation of her novel.
To adapt is the verb; adaptable describes something capable of change.
