exon

Gene's kept part

An exon is a segment of a gene that codes for protein.

Genes contain alternating exons and introns; during protein synthesis, introns are spliced out while exons are joined together to form the final messenger RNA.

The term comes from "expressed region," since exons are the parts that get expressed as protein.
