haplotype

Linked allele set

A haplotype is a set of genetic variants inherited together from a single parent.

Because certain gene sequences tend to travel as a package across generations, researchers use haplotypes to trace ancestry, study disease inheritance, and match organ donors: The haplotype analysis revealed her Central Asian ancestry.

The term combines "haploid" (single chromosome set) with "genotype."
