Hagia Sophia
Byzantine cathedral, now museum
Hagia Sophia is a monumental domed building in Istanbul, Turkey, originally built as a Byzantine cathedral in the sixth century.
It served as the seat of Eastern Orthodox Christianity for nearly a thousand years before becoming a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453.
The structure later functioned as a museum and was reconverted to a mosque in 2020.
Its massive dome and Byzantine mosaics make it one of the most celebrated architectural achievements in history.
