joss house

Incense-filled worship hall

A joss house is a Chinese temple or shrine, particularly as the term was used in 19th and early 20th century America and Australia.

Joss comes from a pidgin corruption of the Portuguese word for god.

The term appears in historical accounts of Chinatowns: The old joss house on Grant Avenue burned down in the earthquake.
