antiquity

Era long gone

Antiquity refers to the ancient past, especially the period of Greek and Roman civilization before the Middle Ages.

A work from that era is an antiquity; in the plural, antiquities are ancient artifacts or relics: The museum's collection of Egyptian antiquities.

The word also denotes great age or ancientness: a castle of considerable antiquity.

These traditions stretch back into antiquity.
