East Jerusalem
Disputed holy city
East Jerusalem is the eastern portion of Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites, captured by Israel from Jordan in the 1967 war.
Palestinians claim it as the capital of a future Palestinian state, while Israel considers the entire city its undivided capital.
The status of East Jerusalem remains one of the most contentious issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Negotiations stalled over East Jerusalem.
International law generally regards it as occupied territory, though Israel disputes this characterization.
