national monument
Federally preserved site
A national monument is a site designated by a government for preservation due to historical, cultural, or natural significance.
In the United States, presidents can create national monuments by proclamation under the Antiquities Act, protecting landmarks, structures, or landscapes: The Grand Canyon was first protected as a national monument.
National monuments often receive less protection than national parks but serve similar conservation purposes.
