Al-Aqsa
Noble Sanctuary mosque
Al-Aqsa is a mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City, sacred in Islam as the place where Muhammad journeyed during his Night Journey.
The site, also called the Noble Sanctuary (Haram al-Sharif), includes the golden Dome of the Rock.
Al-Aqsa is a flashpoint in Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with disputes over access and sovereignty frequently sparking violence: clashes at Al-Aqsa, the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
