City of David

Ancient Israelite capital

City of David refers to the oldest settled part of Jerusalem, a ridge south of the Temple Mount where King David established his capital around 1000 BCE.

The name appears throughout the Bible and remains central to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions.

In the New Testament, Bethlehem is also called the City of David as David's birthplace: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour.

Today the term often refers to an archaeological site in Jerusalem where excavations continue to uncover ancient structures.
